Chuck

Quotes of the Week: October 23-29

These are my favorite quotes from the past week, mostly from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

Supergirl
J‘onn: People in this world don’t have much tolerance for others who look different. I say that as an alien, and as someone who’s worn the face of a black man for fifteen years.

Lucifer
Lucifer: Welcome to Devil Time.
Chloe: What are you doing?
Lucifer: Trying out my new catch phrase.
Dan: “Welcome to Devil Time”? What the hell does that mean?
Lucifer: She knows what it means.
Jamie: I have no idea what that means.

Chloe: A couple days ago, I was in a really bad car accident. And I’ve spent the last few days trying to convince everybody that cares about me that it wasn’t a big deal. The truth is, I’m terrified. I’m scared of how it can all just end, with no rhyme or reason. And what I want to do right now is just go home and read a bedtime story to my daughter. But, you know, that’s not up to me either. We can’t control what happens to us, only how it affects us and the choices we make.

Timeless
Ian Fleming: Rufus, there are allies, contacts, and women, but never trust. Only the mission.

Conviction
Hayes: Honestly, Dan, I hope your audience sees through this charade, because this here – Me in these pearls and this stupid suit – this is what privilege looks like.
Dan: Can you elaborate on that?
Hayes: The fact that you’re here talking to me – this is the problem. Rich, famous, powerful people get away with murder all the time, sometimes literally. Coke in the purse, insider trading, sexual assault – you name it. I screw up. Because of my last name, the cops call the DA. He calls my mom. Strings are pulled. I’m out on the street in an hour with a new job – a job I initially had no interest in. Funny thing is, I like causing trouble, busting the system, exposing wrongful convictions. Kind of gets me off. So, really, it worked for me, again. Now, hopefully, it’s also a bonus to people like Penny Price – a mom accused of killing her own son – to have me on their side. Because I may be a hot mess, but I’m a hot mess with privilege. And since Penny Price has none, the least I can do is lend her some of mine.

The West Wing
Senator Marino: It seems to me that more and more we’ve come to expect less and less from each other.

Arrow
Diggle: You broke me out of prison.
Lyla: For better or worse, Johnny.
Diggle: I told you I wanted to stay.
Lyla: And I figured, if you wanted to make your own decisions then you wouldn’t have gotten married.

Evelyn: Things have really fallen apart without Oliver.
Oliver: It’s a good thing I’m back then.
Rory: Was he waiting for an entrance line?
Curtis: No. He’s just that cool.

Throwback Thursday: Chuck

This was originally on my first blog site Aye, Tortuga!, but I felt that it was appropriate to re-post since all five seasons of Chuck are being taken off of Netflix on November 1st. I updated a few sections with more recent information otherwise, these were my first thoughts about the series. Viva BuyMoria!

A few years ago, I decided that it was finally time to start watching Chuck. I have now watched all five seasons and would consider myself officially part of the Nerd Herd.

I am not really sure why I never watched the show when it aired starting in 2007. I do know that I did not yet have DVR, so I was probably watching How I Met Your Mother instead. I actually do not really remember thinking about it much when it was on. I loved Adam Baldwin in Firefly and Sarah Lancaster in What About Brian, and probably recognized Zachary Levi, but none of them were enough to interest me in the show. This was also about the time that I was not watching Friday Night Lights either so, clearly, I was not thinking straight.

To be honest, the reason I did start watching Chuck was because of Orphan Black. I know that sounds weird, so let me explain. I watched all of Orphan Black after ATX Television Festival Season Two and was instantly obsessed. Shortly after watching the whole first season, the cast went to San Diego Comic Con, at which they did a panel for Zachary Levi’s Nerd Machine. Once I discovered the Orphan Black panel online, I then watched many of the other Nerd Machine panels throughout the weekend that were streaming on YouTube, including one with Levi himself, and soon came to the conclusion that I should at least give Chuck a try.

The only way that I could watch it initially was to get the discs from Netflix, so the first two seasons took me quite a while to get through. (And when I say, “quite a while,” I mean about two months.) I was just starting to lose steam and then, as if they knew exactly what I was thinking, Netflix made the whole series available to stream the following week and I flew threw the last three seasons.

Clark: No pressure.

Winn: Family is not about score-keeping, or who did more, it’s just about showing up.

Jane: Why won’t you give up?

Kareema: Maybe he’s crazy. Maybe what I’m doing is crazy too but, maybe sometimes crazy’s worth it.

These are my favorite quotes from the past week, mostly from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

Westworld

Peter: You don’t know where you are. Do you? You’re in a prison of your own sins.

Masters of Sex
Bram: Hey, pal, if you want to do a little do-si-do with Gloria, the gal I walked in here with, she’s got quite a beaver.

Bram: Her coat is beaver.

Lucifer: Bollocks.

Lucy: This is Dr. Dre. I’m Nurse Jackie. We’re from General Hospital.

8 Binge-Worthy Shows…

A friend asked me to recommend some shows that she could stream either on Netflix or Amazon Prime. She requested that the series already be over so that she could just binge the whole thing. I tried to come up with shows that were not the obvious choices (e.g. Gilmore Girls, Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad, etc.), mostly because you should have watched those already, and also shows that had more than one season, so here is what I came up with:

1. Spartacus, will be available on Netflix starting February 1st
Based on the real story of Spartacus, this follows the man from when he became a gladiator until his death. It is pretty graphic, both with blood and sex, but it is mostly driven by the stories of its characters which are very compelling. The performances are all amazing and it is just a really fantastic show from start to finish.

2. Bomb Girls, only available on Netflix
It takes place in Canada during World War 2 and follows several women who risked their lives while working in a munitions factory building bombs. I do not want to spoil it too much, but something kind of gruesome happens at the very end of the first episode that did initially turn me off. However, I gave it a second chance and the rest of the series was great.

3. The Tudors, available on Netflix and Amazon Prime
The show takes us through the reign of Henry VIII as the King of England, including all six of his wives, over four seasons. It is interesting to see how Henry’s decisions and opinions changed over the course of his monarchy depending on his age or his advisors. I am especially fascinated by how much history was influenced by men’s sex drives!

4. Chuck, only available on Netflix
Chuck Bartowski works at a Buy More and is part of the Nerd Herd. That is until his former college roommate sends him an encoded email which embeds all of the United States’ spy secrets in his brain. Chuck is then recruited by the CIA and the NSA to hunt down international terrorists. You have to get past the fact that, despite this being a show about spies, it is completely unrealistic, but it is a whole lot of fun.

8 Halloween Costumes…

I have never been super creative when it comes to Halloween costumes, as a kid I tended to dress as a witch or something else where I could use clothes I already owned, so I always love other people’s crazy ideas. These are my favorite costumes worn by television characters.

1. Ross as Spudnik – Friends
I mostly love that Ross is dressed as a giant potato.

2. Jess as Zombie Woody Allen – New Girl
It is just so random. Costumes like this would never even occur to me.

3. Ted as a Hanging Chad – How I Met Your Mother
I love that he wore the same costume every single year to the same party hoping to run into the Slutty Pumpkin that he met once, even though his costume was no longer topical.

4. Bert as Iron Man – Trophy Wife
Okay, so technically, Bert was dressed in the actual Iron Man costume, but Jackie’s misunderstanding of what costume he wanted is funnier.

8 of the Best TV Sisters…

Today is my sister-in-law’s birthday and so I have put together a list of my favorite sisters in her honor. I do not know what it is like growing up with a sister, as I only have the one brother, but these relationships made me want one. Sometimes they even reminded me how annoying I was myself.

1. Danielle – My So-Called Life played by Lisa Wilhoit. We did not really know very much about Danielle, except that she was usually jealous of Angela and had a crush on Brian Krakow. I’d like to think that if the show had lasted more than one season, we would have learned more about Danielle and her life.

2. Rudy, Vanessa and Denise – The Cosby Show played by Keshia Knight Pulliam, Tempestt Bledsoe and Lisa Bonet. They fought a lot, just like siblings do, but they were also always there for each other. There was a fourth sister played by Sabrina Le Beauf, but I never really liked Sondra or her storylines and she never lived in the house with the rest of the family.

3. Ginnie, Anne, Marjee and Rose – Related played by Jennifer Esposito, Kiele Sanchez, Lizzy Caplan and Laura Breckenridge. This was a WB show that only last one season, but I really loved the family dynamic between these four sisters. They were each different and had different interests, but they supported each other and were very involved in each other’s lives.

4. Ellie – Chuck played by Sarah Lancaster. Ellie was kept in the dark about what her brother was really up to most of the time but, since their mother left when they were young, she had basically raised Chuck and just wanted him to be happy and safe.
