No Tomorrow

Quotes of the Week: January 8-21

These are my favorite quotes from the past two weeks, mostly from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

The Royals
Robert: Okay, everyone, we’re going to be extremely British right now and pretend that none of that just happened.

The Man in the High Castle
Ron: Used to be I thought victory was winning. Then I convinced myself it’s surviving. The truth is, I know I should do more.

No Tomorrow
Kareema: Detroit?! I can’t go to Michigan. That state’s shaped like a mitten, it’s way too adorable.

Talia: He is a model of the typical post-election American. Totally terrified that the end of the world is coming via a fiery orange nightmare barreling straight toward us.

This Is Us
Toby: I would totally marry you, if that’s something you’re down with.
Kate: You would?
Toby: I’d marry the hell outta you, Kate Pearson.
Kate: You would? Wait, just like that?
Toby: Just like that? It was just like that from the moment I met you, kid.

Shooter
Jack: You’ll never shoot. You’re a housewife.
Julie: I’m a Swagger.

Quotes of the Week: December 18-January 7

These are my favorite quotes from the past few weeks, mostly from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

Shameless
Frank: It’s like a family heirloom, only drugs!

Frank: Every time I look at one of you kid’s faces, I see her face looking back at me – smiling, laughing. She was strong. And you’re strong. And she was brave, and you’re brave. I know you didn’t think much of her, but…she loved you. And you wouldn’t be who you are, and I wouldn’t be who I am, if she hadn’t come into our lives. So, hate her if you want…but she’s in you, and that’s a good thing.

The Royals
Eleanor: Don’t ever doubt your words again. They’re perfect. Just believe in them.

No Tomorrow
Evie: You’ve convinced yourself the past doesn’t matter because you’re too afraid to confront it.

Vikings
Ragnar: Everyone will always underestimate you. You must make them pay for it.

Crazyhead
Raquel: Do demons like figure skating? Did you really just ask me that?
Amy: I’m not familiar with their leisure pursuits.

Suzanne: Just because I died doesn’t mean we can’t snuggle.

Sense8
Wolfgang: Happy fuckin’ New Year.

8 Episodes from 2016…

My list of favorite episodes each year is usually a combination of things that made me think, and things that just made me really happy. I always like to preface my list with the recognition that these are simply *my* favorite episodes, and not necessarily the best episodes, because I know that there is way too much good TV to make that statement, and that other people have different tastes than me. So, here we go…

1. Game of Thrones “The Winds of Winter”
The previous episode “The Battle of the Bastards” was also fantastic, but this is my favorite because everything starts to come together in the season finale. Cersei refuses to stand trial, and instead blows up the High Sparrow, the Faith Militant, and most of the Tyrell family. Tommen then kills himself, and Cersei takes the Iron Throne. Aria exacts vengeance on House Frey for the Red Wedding. Bran has become the Three-Eyed Raven and learns that Jon Snow is the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. Jon and Sansa have reclaimed Winterfell for the Starks, and Jon is named the King of the North by the rest of the Northern families, with a little help from Lyanna Mormont. Daenerys makes Tyrion the Hand of the Queen and begins sailing across the Summer Sea with her dragons and her army, aligned with Dorne, Highgarden, and House Greyjoy. Everything seems to have fallen into place, and it set-up what will hopefully be a eventful season seven. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

2. Black Sails “XXVIII”
I had not read a lot about the show before starting to watch, and have never read Treasure Island, so I actually did not know that the show is a prequel to the book until the end of the most recent season. I mostly just like pirates and decided to finally catch up on the whole series this year. In this season finale, there is an epic battle between Flint’s and Rackham’s crews, the Maroons and the British. After the British are handily defeated, with help from Blackbeard, the pirate captains sit down together and begin to figure out a plan to take back Nassau. Meanwhile, Billy Bones and a few select others have been instilling fear in the people of the island, and Silver is finally given the name ‘Long John Silver.’ Lines have been drawn in Nassau, and if you are not with the pirates, you are against them.

3. 12 Monkeys “Blood Washed Away”
For me, this is the best science fiction show on television right now. Every season I think they cannot possibly blow my mind any more, and then they do, over and over again throughout the season. Cole and Cassie are stuck together in 1958, with no way back to the future unless they stop the primary from causing another paradox. When they fail, they FINALLY admit to each other that they are both in love, and they face those feelings head on. Back in 2044, everyone else is searching for Titan so that they can kill The Witness. This is not the season finale, but it ends in such a way that you have no idea how they could possibly go on from here, and yet they do somehow, and it is excellent.

4. Lovesick “Frankie”
This show makes me laugh a lot. This episode in particular made me cry with laughter. The reason this episode has made my list is because of one specific scene where Angus has eaten hallucinogenic mushrooms and somehow manages to get into the freezer at a grocery store. He is enjoying the cold temperature, and tells Dylan that it’s like being in Narnia. When the grocery store employee tells him to get out, he tries to hide by putting a bag of frozen peas over his face. Later, after Dylan’s car gets a flat tire, Angus is afraid that they are being watched so he runs into the woods and climbs a tree. I chuckle just thinking about it.

Quotes of the Week: December 4-17

These are my favorite quotes from the past two weeks, mostly from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

Shameless
Debbie: We’re South Siders and we don’t sell out.

The Royals
Jasper: I particularly enjoyed the part where you called me a ‘pretty young thing.’
Eleanor: It’s too soon for that.
Jasper: I gave it a shot.

Simon: I’m the King of England. I don’t do my own wet work.

Timeless
Lucy: If there’s only one person for you in the whole world, and you lose them, does that mean you have to live the rest of your life without anyone else? I think you…we…anyone…has to be open to possibilities.

The Flash
H.R.: The longer you deny someone their potential, the more they’re gonna look for it elsewhere.

Iris: I don’t understand. Where are we?
Barry: Home.

New Girl
Jess: Where does a modern girl go to make a fake guy real?

This Is Us
Rebecca: Nothing bad happens on Christmas Eve.

No Tomorrow
Kareema: You’re like a human hangover.

Hank: Are you dead?
Kareema: Inside? Yes. And I like it that way.

Arrow
Oliver: He’s trying to prove to me that everyone I-I…I come in contact with, everyone close to me dies, and he’s right. Y… I think that uh… I think that all of you should get as far away from me as you possibly can.
Diggle: Oliver, we are exactly where we’re supposed to be.

The Vampire Diaries
Damon: Merry Christmas, Ric!
Alaric: I killed you.
Caroline: You what?!
Alaric: He deserved it.

Caroline: Well, Damon’s alive, as you can see, Bonnie and Enzo are late, and Stefan’s dead. Merry Christmas. I’ve got gifts!

Medici: Masters of Florence
Giovanni: A foolish man lives for himself. A wise man lives with a purpose.

Quotes of the Week: November 20-December 3

These are my favorite quotes from the past two weeks, mostly from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching. I thought that, with the holiday, I would not have as many. Clearly, I was wrong.

Supergirl
Kara: If I leave you here, Alex will never forgive me.
Jeremiah: Kara, if you die here, there will be no one to forgive.

Kara: You can still be scared while being brave.

Jane the Virgin
Jane: I’m gonna hug you, okay? Just stand still.

Conviction
Hayes: Noble intentions don’t make it okay to withhold information or obscure the truth.

Timeless
Rufus: What’s the point of having a time machine if you can’t fix your regrets?

Lucy: So what are our options? We stay here and fight off the French or die of smallpox eventually?
Rufus: Pretty much.
Wyatt: Likely death either way.
Rufus: Yeah.
Wyatt: What the hell? I’m in.
Lucy: Me too.
Rufus: Tough call for me. I was really hoping to be sold into slavery.

The Flash
Caitlin: Some things you break can’t be put back together.

H.R.: Barry’s real super power isn’t speed, it’s hope.

Barry: I told you I couldn’t do this without you.
Iris: And you’ll never have to.

Joe: Every time I think you’ve run out of ways to show me you’re a hero, you show me another one.

New Girl
Nick: Look at that, Mom, I’m gonna be a hero.
Schmidt: Why are you looking up? Your mother is still alive.
Nick: I’m looking at Chicago.
Schmidt: You think Chicago is up?
Nick: It’s North.

Schmidt: I know who you are and I still love you.

This Is Us
Olivia: How does it feel to be dying?
William: It feels… like all these beautiful pieces of life are flying around me and… I’m trying to catch them. When my granddaughter falls asleep in my lap, I try to catch the feeling of her breathing against me. And when I make my son laugh, I try to catch the sound of him laughing. How it rolls up from his chest. But the pieces are moving faster now, and I can’t catch them all. I can feel them slipping through my fingertips. And soon, where there used to be my granddaughter breathing and my son laughing, there will be… nothing.
Olivia: Oh.
William: I know it feels like you have all the time in the world. But you don’t. So, stop playing it so cool. Catch the moments of your life. Catch them while you’re young and quick. Because sooner than you know it, you’ll be old and slow. And there’ll be no more of them to catch. And when a nice boy who adores you offers you pie, say thank you.

No Tomorrow
Kareema: I can’t believe you’re doing work that isn’t actual work just to try to get a job and have more work.

Mary Anne: I couldn’t decide if I should drink or take a bath, so I’m kinda doin’ both.

8 Things For Which I Am Thankful…

These are the mostly television related things that I am most thankful for this year. It has been another year of ups and downs and this is what helps get me through it all.

1. No Tomorrow
I wrote an entire post about why I think you should be watching this awesome new CW show, but mostly it just makes me laugh a lot. It is genuine and uplifting, and it is the show that I currently look forward to the most each week. I have actually decided that I am most like Kareema, only she says things out loud and I just think them, and I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Either way, it has been a great escape these last few months, and I appreciate that more than ever.

2. Lin-Manuel Miranda
Not only do I pretty much have the Hamilton Soundtrack, the Hamilton Mixtape, and the Moana Soundtrack all on repeat right now, but following Lin-Manuel on social media is the best decision I have ever made. Every day, he posts a ‘good morning’ and a ‘good night’ message, and they are always hopeful and encouraging. He is genuine, thoughtful, and supportive, and I just appreciate him. This awesome song from Moana was written by Miranda and sung by Dwayne Johnson:

3. Alfred James Band
When I lived in Philadelphia, I became friends with the Alfred James Band, and even though we have lost touch a bit since I moved to Texas, I was ridiculously excited when they released their second album recently. I had missed hearing these songs, and the album was everything I hoped it would be. I was especially surprised and touched after learning that one of the songs was written for me, and it reminded me that no matter where you go in life, a part of everyone you’ve ever met stays with you forever. You can listen to and download ‘Forgotten,’ as well as the rest of the album here:

4. Gilmore Girls
I probably will not have a chance to watch all four parts of the revival this weekend, but I am so excited!! A part of me is actually a little sad about it, only because I know that once I watch them, then it’s really over. The four words will have been spoken, and there will be no more. But I know that it will be amazing to be back in Stars Hollow with these characters and, for that, I am grateful.

These are my favorite quotes from the past week, mostly from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

Supergirl
James: This is who I am. I can’t hide behind my camera anymore. If there’s a cost, I’ll pay it.

Lucifer
Jensen: Carbs are the Devil’s spawn, man.
Lucifer: Don’t blame your weaknesses on me!

Timeless
Agent Christopher: When you find Flynn, maybe you can blind him with that suit.
Wyatt: I look like Greg Brady.
Agent Christopher: Well, go find Marcia and Peter and get going.

Mark Felt: All I want is a president who plays by the same rules as everyone else. Now is that too much to ask?

The Flash
Barry: There is no Flash without Iris West.

New Girl
Schmidt: This just proves my theory that if you were a man, you would have a very difficult time getting an erection.
Jess: You have a theory about that?

Schmidt: My wife gave me a fat-man scarf!

You Should Be Watching No Tomorrow

I think I can fairly say that this year has completely worn us all out. The events of last week’s election, coupled with the amount of hate and anger that seems to be going around is making me really sad. Usually my television shows distract me enough that I can escape the real world for a few hours each night, but I have recently realized that a lot of the shows I am currently watching are dark and depressing. There are few brights spots, like Jane the Virgin and Younger, but even my light-hearted superhero shows are getting me down. Which is why I am surprised that more people are not watching No Tomorrow on The CW.

No Tomorrow is about Evie, played by Tori Anderson, a quality-control assessor living in Seattle who falls for Xavier, played by Joshua Sasse, the hot guy at her local farmer’s market. It turns out that Xavier believes the world is going to be destroyed by an asteroid in eight months and twelve days, and he tries to live life to the fullest. Every day he does at least one thing off his “apocalyst.” With the help of Evie’s quirky co-workers and her family, she is tries to figure out if Xavier can be taken seriously, or if he is simply crazy.

I first discovered Sasse on Galavant (an ABC casualty, despite two awesome seasons), and I find his on-screen chemistry with Anderson to be downright delightful. Jonathan Langdon, Sarayu Blue, Jesse Rath, and Amy Pietz round out the hilarious supporting cast, with Ted McGinley, Gigi Rice, and Kelly Stables recurring as Evie’s family.

While the premise of a guy who thinks the world is going to end soon sounds like a real downer, it is actually the show that I look forward to the most each week. Every episode makes me laugh a lot, and it just makes me really happy. It is genuine and uplifting, and it has even inspired me to make my own “apocalyst,” which definitely includes getting into a food fight, preferably with lots of cake. It also does not hurt that Xavier is shirtless at least once per episode:

I do not think you need to watch the first episode if you want to jump right into the series. However, if you would like to, it will only be on The CW‘s website until tomorrow. And I highly recommend that you do so immediately. In fact, I am going to re-watch the pilot right now! **Update: The entire first season has now been added to Netflix, so you have no excuses not to watch it!**

Quotes of the Week: October 30-November 5

These are my favorite quotes from the past week, mostly from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

Elementary
Joan: Sherlock never said that you two knew each other.
Julius: Yes. I’m not surprised. My very existence seems to embarrass him. You know, if it weren’t for me, our friend Sherlock would still think that the Sun revolves around the Earth.
Sherlock: I was eight when I made that mistake. You chose to wear that vest this morning.
Julius: It was a gift from a fan. How could I resist?
Sherlock: With self-respect.

Sherlock: When you and I first started, I quickly recognized your merits, both as a detective in your own right and in that you facilitated my own process. I’m better at the work I do because of you. But over the years, the relative importance of those two values has flipped. I now value the work that we do, first and foremost, because I do it with you. So if at times I seem overprotective of the system that we’ve built, if I worry that the resentments of others might disrupt it, I have good reason.
Joan: Those chips you showed me last night, you don’t accept them for yourself. You accept them because you’re part of a group. You accept them because the work you did to stand up at a meeting inspires others. It’s bigger than you. Or us. So you show up.

Supergirl
Kara: Maybe don’t let Winn teach you too much about women on this planet.

Kara: I’m sure you’ve figured it out by now, but it’s not a good idea to bet against me.

Jane the Virgin
Rogelio: A superhero for every weekday. You guys are programming masterminds!

Timeless
Davy Crockett: Sometimes, folks need a leader who can wrestle a bear.

The Flash
Cisco: Sometimes a man just wants to butter his own bread.

No Tomorrow
Dierdre: What’s on your social calendar this evening?
Hank: Practicing holding my breath in case of a chemical attack.

Evie: I’m truly sorry for everything.
Fern: You keep saying that but, the truth is, you never made it up to me. Being sorry doesn’t change a thing.

Xavier: I don’t want every possible option. I want you.

Quotes of the Week: October 16-22

Masters of Sex
Bill: They don’t see what you and Helen have done. That you’ve made a family.

Supergirl
Clark: If the bullets don’t work, why the punching? I never understood that.

Winn: I get to make Superman’s new suit?
Clark: No pressure.

Winn: Family is not about score-keeping, or who did more, it’s just about showing up.

Jane the Virgin
Jane: Why won’t you give up?
Michael: Because I’m a fighter. You should know that about me. I’m a fighter.

Timeless
Lucy: We saved Judith Campbell. Kept history the same.
Agent Christopher: But Garcia Flynn is still alive, and he got away with an atomic bomb!
Wyatt: The situation was chaotic.
Rufus: On the up side, we’re finally starting to gel as a team.

The West Wing
President Bartlet: Keep talking. I’m just going to sit here and think about plutonium, and the things I can do with it.

The Flash
Barry: He’s just blaming you for all the bad things he’s caused in his life.

No Tomorrow
Dierdre: I trust the cup holder is of sufficient diameter for a man of your thirsts.

Xavier: I like that you really thought about your word choice and then went with ‘rigamarole.’

Kareema: Everyone’s trying to make sense of an illogical world. That’s just his way. It’s not the only way.

Kareema: Maybe he’s crazy. Maybe what I’m doing is crazy too but, maybe sometimes crazy’s worth it.
