Spartacus

8 Awesome Hairstyles…

I grew up with a mother who did not really know how to do anything to my hair except put it in a ponytail. (Yes, I had a bowl cut for much of my childhood, let’s not talk about it.) Needless to say, I have always been jealous of people who can pull off funky hairstyles. This is my list of female TV characters with awesomely crazy hair. Spoiler Alert: there are lots of braids.

1. Naevia – Spartacus, played by Cynthia Addai Robinson
When you are spending most of your time killing Romans, you need some badass hair to go along with your new badass gladiator skills.

2. Suzanne ‘Crazy Eyes’ Warren – Orange Is The New Black, played by Uzo Aduba
This hairstyle totally suits her personality and I do not think her eyes would look quite as crazy without it.

3. Rayanne Graff – My So-Called Life, played by A.J. Langer
Rayanne’s style is totally ’90s Grunge and I always loved the one random strand in the front that was usually blonde, but was sometimes other funky colors.

4. Octavia – The 100, played by Marie Avgeropoulos
Once she joined the Grounders, Octavia needed to look the part of one of their warriors.

Quotes of the Week: March 15-21

These are my favorite quotes from the past week, not just from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

The Good Wife
Marissa: Handsome men are so weak.

Battle Creek
Russ: Your snitch is an NBA cheerleader?
Al: You got a problem with that?
Russ: No, I don’t got a problem with that. The problem I got is that *my* snitch is a fat, annoying, hairy moron.

Dean: Uh, like a hole in the head!
Frankie: A hole in the head is something that you *don’t* need.
Dean: She said through a huge hole in her head.

Jeff: I’ll never get out of here, will I?
Dean: I haven’t met many that do.

8 Binge-Worthy Shows…

A friend asked me to recommend some shows that she could stream either on Netflix or Amazon Prime. She requested that the series already be over so that she could just binge the whole thing. I tried to come up with shows that were not the obvious choices (e.g. Gilmore Girls, Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad, etc.), mostly because you should have watched those already, and also shows that had more than one season, so here is what I came up with:

1. Spartacus, will be available on Netflix starting February 1st
Based on the real story of Spartacus, this follows the man from when he became a gladiator until his death. It is pretty graphic, both with blood and sex, but it is mostly driven by the stories of its characters which are very compelling. The performances are all amazing and it is just a really fantastic show from start to finish.

2. Bomb Girls, only available on Netflix
It takes place in Canada during World War 2 and follows several women who risked their lives while working in a munitions factory building bombs. I do not want to spoil it too much, but something kind of gruesome happens at the very end of the first episode that did initially turn me off. However, I gave it a second chance and the rest of the series was great.

3. The Tudors, available on Netflix and Amazon Prime
The show takes us through the reign of Henry VIII as the King of England, including all six of his wives, over four seasons. It is interesting to see how Henry’s decisions and opinions changed over the course of his monarchy depending on his age or his advisors. I am especially fascinated by how much history was influenced by men’s sex drives!

4. Chuck, only available on Netflix
Chuck Bartowski works at a Buy More and is part of the Nerd Herd. That is until his former college roommate sends him an encoded email which embeds all of the United States’ spy secrets in his brain. Chuck is then recruited by the CIA and the NSA to hunt down international terrorists. You have to get past the fact that, despite this being a show about spies, it is completely unrealistic, but it is a whole lot of fun.

8 Beards and Mustaches…

I am a big fan of Movember and No-Shave November, especially when guys who do not normally have facial hair grow crazy mustaches to promote men’s health. So in honor of hairy men everywhere, this is my list of male TV characters with the best facial hair. For a couple of the shows, I have more than one character listed because I could not decide whose was the best.

1. Thomas Magnum – Magnum P.I., played by Tom Selleck.
You cannot have a list about facial hair without Tom Selleck. He shaved it at one point and life was not the same, but he is back rockin’ the ‘stache on Blue Bloods.

2. Seth Bullock and Al Swearengen – Deadwood, played by Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane.
Most of the men on this show had pretty great facial hair, but these two were my favorite. Someone needs to bring back the mustache with a soul patch.

3. Jay Kulina – Kingdom, played by Jonathan Tucker.
Jay is a bit of a wild card and I think his facial hair reflects that. The mustache and chin strap combo is a little crazy looking but it totally works for him.

4. Jax Teller, Opie Winston, Bobby Munson, Tig Trager and Chibs Telford – Sons of Anarchy, played by Charlie Hunnam, Ryan Hurst, Mark Boone Junior, Kim Coates and Tommy Flanagan.
All of these guys have some awesome beards going. Although, it is fun to go back and look at season one when they were a little more clean cut, I definitely prefer their current looks.
