Tatiana Maslany

Throwback Thursday: Orphan Black

In preparation for Saturday’s final Orphan Black season premiere, I thought I would share the blog I wrote after watching the first season, which was originally posted at Aye, Tortuga!. I updated a few sections, otherwise, these were my first thoughts about the series.

I follow a lot of entertainment-related people on my Twitter account. I also tend to follow people that I agree with so, sometimes my perception of what the majority of people are actually watching and enjoying is a little skewed. From my Facebook feed, it seems like most of my friends have not yet discovered one of my new favorite shows, so I thought I would try to change that, especially considering those same friends compose the majority of my readers. (Sadly, this fact has not changed much since that first season but, there are a few more Clone Club members now.)

Over the past month, my Twitter timeline has been a constant love-fest for new show Orphan Black. I was not initially planning to watch this show, but I could not ignore the loud voices telling me how amazing it was, and I am very glad that I gave into the peer pressure. They were right and you should all be watching it as well.

While it was actually airing, I had only seen a few posts here and there about this new BBC America series but, again, mostly from entertainment writers and bloggers and mostly from the same few people. However, after hearing about Tatiana Maslany for four days straight at Season 2 of the ATX Television Festival, I decided I should probably see what everyone was talking about.

8 Emmy Nomination Thoughts…

This morning this list of 2016 Emmy Nominations was announced, and I had a few thoughts that I wanted to share. The full list of nominees can be found here: http://www.emmys.com/awards/nominees-winners There are several people and shows that were snubbed this year, and several nominations that I am really excited about, these are a just a few of each.

1. Tatiana Maslany
She was nominated for the first time last year, but I am thrilled to see her get recognized again this year. Not only does she play multiple characters every season, but she often plays those different characters playing each other. It sounds complicated, and it is, and she does it beautifully and with such nuance that I forget that it is only one actor playing all these roles.

2. Jane the Virgin
I have said it before, and I will say it again, but this is my favorite show on television right now and I cannot believe that neither Gina Rodriguez or Jaime Camil were not nominated for their work. I do not even know what else to say about that. Thankfully, Anthony Mendez was at least recognized for his amazing voice-overs.

3. Outlander
The only nominations they got were for Production Design and Costumes, which are all well deserved, but no where near enough. I have read the books, and usually know what is coming in each episode, and yet their performances continue to break me into a million pieces every week. Caitroina Balfe and Sam Heughan brilliantly explored the aftermath of last season’s sexual assault, but I think the second half of season 2 counts towards next years Emmys, including Claire’s miscarriage, so maybe that was the reason for the snub…?

4. William H. Macy
I love William H. Macy, and I love to see Shameless get recognized even a little bit but, for me, he is not the best performance on this show. Emmy Rossum and Jeremy Allen White have been killing it for a while now, and Ethan Cutosky was especially amazing this past season. I know this show can be sometimes be pretty dramatic, so maybe Carl’s storyline was just too serious for the comedy category, but I was incredibly impressed by him this year.

8 Actors That I Hope Win Emmys…

The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards are this Sunday, September 20th at 8/7c on Fox. As usual, there are a few people missing from the list of nominees, but none-the-less, I am still excited to see who takes home a statuette this year.

1. Tatiana Maslany – Orphan Black
Not only does she play multiple characters in each episode, sometimes four versions of herself in one scene, but she does each so well that you often forget they are all the same actor. If she does not win, then the only other acceptable recipient is Taraji.

2. Emma Thompson – Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street (Live From Lincoln Center)
To be honest, I have not actually seen this performance. However, I do love Sweeney Todd and I love Emma Thomspon, so how could it have been bad? Plus, Thompson is hilarious and is sure to give a great speech if she wins.

3. William H. Macy – Shameless
I have said it before and I am sure that I will say it many more times, but Shameless is one of the most under-rated shows on TV and Macy’s performance as Frank is always fantastic. I know he will probably never win, but I cross my fingers for him every year.

4. Lily Tomlin – Grace and Frankie
She is proof that women are funny, not just at any age, but at every age.
