You Should Be Watching No Tomorrow

I think I can fairly say that this year has completely worn us all out. The events of last week’s election, coupled with the amount of hate and anger that seems to be going around is making me really sad. Usually my television shows distract me enough that I can escape the real world for a few hours each night, but I have recently realized that a lot of the shows I am currently watching are dark and depressing. There are few brights spots, like Jane the Virgin and Younger, but even my light-hearted superhero shows are getting me down. Which is why I am surprised that more people are not watching No Tomorrow on The CW.

No Tomorrow is about Evie, played by Tori Anderson, a quality-control assessor living in Seattle who falls for Xavier, played by Joshua Sasse, the hot guy at her local farmer’s market. It turns out that Xavier believes the world is going to be destroyed by an asteroid in eight months and twelve days, and he tries to live life to the fullest. Every day he does at least one thing off his “apocalyst.” With the help of Evie’s quirky co-workers and her family, she is tries to figure out if Xavier can be taken seriously, or if he is simply crazy.

I first discovered Sasse on Galavant (an ABC casualty, despite two awesome seasons), and I find his on-screen chemistry with Anderson to be downright delightful. Jonathan Langdon, Sarayu Blue, Jesse Rath, and Amy Pietz round out the hilarious supporting cast, with Ted McGinley, Gigi Rice, and Kelly Stables recurring as Evie’s family.

While the premise of a guy who thinks the world is going to end soon sounds like a real downer, it is actually the show that I look forward to the most each week. Every episode makes me laugh a lot, and it just makes me really happy. It is genuine and uplifting, and it has even inspired me to make my own “apocalyst,” which definitely includes getting into a food fight, preferably with lots of cake. It also does not hurt that Xavier is shirtless at least once per episode:

I do not think you need to watch the first episode if you want to jump right into the series. However, if you would like to, it will only be on The CW‘s website until tomorrow. And I highly recommend that you do so immediately. In fact, I am going to re-watch the pilot right now! **Update: The entire first season has now been added to Netflix, so you have no excuses not to watch it!**

Quotes of the Week: October 30-November 5

These are my favorite quotes from the past week, mostly from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

Elementary
Joan: Sherlock never said that you two knew each other.
Julius: Yes. I’m not surprised. My very existence seems to embarrass him. You know, if it weren’t for me, our friend Sherlock would still think that the Sun revolves around the Earth.
Sherlock: I was eight when I made that mistake. You chose to wear that vest this morning.
Julius: It was a gift from a fan. How could I resist?
Sherlock: With self-respect.

Sherlock: When you and I first started, I quickly recognized your merits, both as a detective in your own right and in that you facilitated my own process. I’m better at the work I do because of you. But over the years, the relative importance of those two values has flipped. I now value the work that we do, first and foremost, because I do it with you. So if at times I seem overprotective of the system that we’ve built, if I worry that the resentments of others might disrupt it, I have good reason.
Joan: Those chips you showed me last night, you don’t accept them for yourself. You accept them because you’re part of a group. You accept them because the work you did to stand up at a meeting inspires others. It’s bigger than you. Or us. So you show up.

Supergirl
Kara: Maybe don’t let Winn teach you too much about women on this planet.

Kara: I’m sure you’ve figured it out by now, but it’s not a good idea to bet against me.

Jane the Virgin
Rogelio: A superhero for every weekday. You guys are programming masterminds!

Timeless
Davy Crockett: Sometimes, folks need a leader who can wrestle a bear.

The Flash
Cisco: Sometimes a man just wants to butter his own bread.

No Tomorrow
Dierdre: What’s on your social calendar this evening?
Hank: Practicing holding my breath in case of a chemical attack.

Evie: I’m truly sorry for everything.
Fern: You keep saying that but, the truth is, you never made it up to me. Being sorry doesn’t change a thing.

Xavier: I don’t want every possible option. I want you.

Quotes of the Week: October 9-15

These are my favorite quotes from the past week, mostly from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

Supergirl
Alex: Your cousin smells terrific.

Clark: Being Kara is just as important as being Supergirl.

Clark: Up, up?
Kara: And away!

Lucifer
Lucifer: Goodness, gracious, great balls of fire.
Chloe: Lucifer.
Lucifer: I mean, I’ve heard of hot pants, but this really brings new meaning to the term “fire crotch,” doesn’t it?
Chloe: Lucifer!
Lucifer: Wait. I have more. Smokey Bobinson. Weekend at Burnie’s.
Ella: His burning bush?
Lucifer: Oh. Very good. That was actually me, by the way, so don’t tell anyone.

Lucifer: I punish because I’m good at it. I love giving people their due. Makes me happy.

Conviction
Hayes: If you don’t want me to sleep with waiters from Mom’s campaign events, don’t hire hot ones.

Hayes: Next time you want to check up on me, find a different spy, because I’m never sleeping with someone already in bed with my mother.

Timeless
Wyatt: An actor.
Lucy: Pretty well-known too. But his brother, Edwin, was literally the most famous actor in America. John never quite measured up.
Rufus: So, this is like if Donnie Wahlberg assassinated the president.
Lucy: Pretty much, actually.

The Flash
Barry: I’ve kissed Iris West twice, and I have managed to erase both times from existence!
Felicity: Yeah, I hate it when that happens.

Felicity: Everybody likes Barry Allen. You’re like pudding. Everybody likes pudding.

Jay: Are you just gonna take a do-over every time you make a mistake? Or will you live with them, and move forward?

Iris: Where ever you go, you’ll always be Barry, and I’ll always be Iris. We always find each other.

New Girl
Jess: You can’t be mad at these people.
Schmidt: But they were all horrible to me, Jess.
Jess: And that’s why you left. You created your own path. You changed cities. You made friends. You found your purpose. You met the love of your life!
Schmidt: I sure did.

The Real O’Neals
Jodi: I’ll make you a deal. I’ll do the modeling gig if you go out with VP Murray on a real date.
Eileen: And why would I do that?
Jodi: Because it’s National Coming Out Day. And if I can come out as someone who’s plus-size, you can come out as someone who’s got a crush on a thin man in Lycra.
Eileen: Of all the fabrics in all the world, he had to wear that one.

8 Returning Fall Shows…

It has been a long time since I last posted. I was distracted this summer with the Olympics, a family vacation, and trying to catch up on way too much television. I am going to try to be more consistent with my posts, but I cannot make any guarantees. Thank you for your patience…if there is anyone still out there reading.

There is a lot of good television right now, as every other TV writer likes to remind us, but these are the returning eight shows that I am most excited about this Fall. Please share your favorite returning shows in the comments!

1. Narcos, season 2 will be released September 2 on Netflix, stars Wagner Moura, Boyd Holbrook, Pedro Pascal, Joanna Christie, Maurice Compte, Stephanie Sigman, Manolo Cardona, Andre Mattos, Roberto Urbina, and Diego Catano. Based on the true story of Pablo Escobar, the first season ended with Escobar escaping from prison, which launches a huge manhunt. While the first season spanned over ten years, season two focuses on the last year and a half of Escobar’s life. Wagner Moura’s portrayal of the drug kingpin is mesmerizing, and it is just a really interesting, well-told story. Even though I know it is a dramatization, it is fascinating to see how Escobar rose to power, and I will be equally interested to see how he got taken down.

2. Blindspot, season 2 premieres September 14th at 10/9c on NBC, stars Jaimie Alexander, Sullivan Stapleton, Rob Brown, Audrey Esparza, Ashley Johnson, Ukweli Roach, Luke Mitchell, Michelle Hurd, and Archie Panjabi. Jane and the FBI have finally learned that she is not Taylor, but there are still so many mysteries surrounding her, her mission, and her tattoos. There are tons of twists and turns, and in season one they were so well executed, every episode had me on the edge of my seat. I also just really love to watch Jaimie Alexander kick lots of ass.

3. Younger, season 3 premieres September 28th at 10/9c on TV Land, stars Sutton Foster, Debi Mazar, Miriam Shor, Hilary Duff, Nico Tortorella, Molly Bernard, Dan Amboyer, and Peter Hermann. I love this show so much. I love the cast. I love the writing. Liza is still keeping her age a secret from almost all of her friends and co-workers, but I am not sure how much longer she will be able to keep up the ruse. She is also in a delicious love triangle with her 20-something boyfriend, who knows she is actually in her 40s, and her 40-something boss, who does not know she is not in her 20s. It is funny and heartwarming and fantastic.

4. Shameless, season premieres October 2nd at 9/8c on Showtime, stars Emmy Rossum, William H. Macy, Jeremy Allen White, Cameron Monaghan, Emma Kenney, Ethan Cutkosky, Brenden Sims, Steve Howey, and Shanola Hampton. This is one of the best ensemble casts on television right now, and they do not get nearly enough recognition for the amazing work they have continued to do on this show for the last seven seasons. The Gallaghers never fail to entertain.

Quotes of the Week: March 20-26

These are my favorite quotes from the past week, not just from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

Daredevil
Frank: People that can hurt you, the ones that can really hurt you, are the ones that are close enough to do it. People that get inside you and… and… and tear you apart, and make you feel like you’re never gonna recover. Shit. I’d-I-I would chop my arm off right here, in this restaurant, just to feel that one more time for my wife. My old lady, she didn’t just break my heart. She… she’d rip it out, she’d tear it apart, she’d step on that shit, feed it to a dog. I mean, she was ruthless. She brought the pain. But she’ll never hurt me again. You see, I’ll never feel that. You sit here and you’re all confused about this thing, but you have it. You have everything. So, hold on to it. Use two hands and never let go. You got it?

Supergirl
Cat: If Mel Gibson can present at the Golden Globes, then Supergirl can win the city back.

Lucy: It all makes sense now.

Siobhan: Seriously? I have too much self-esteem to kill myself.

Jane the Virgin
Pablo: Electricity is a funny thing. No one really understands it.

Lucifer
Lucifer: Frank Lawrence. The most evil of people have the most normal names, I’ve experienced. Beware anyone named Keith.

Father Lawrence: We might not always understand it, but God has a plan.
Lucifer: Yes, I know. But, why does everybody always think it’s a *good* plan?

Lost Girl
Bo: It’s the end of an era.

Kensi: Who needs weapons when you’ve got…mascara and heels?

Bo: I promise you will not grow up a lost girl.

The Flash
Dr. Wells: You lose a chunk of your humanity every time you compromise your values.

Cisco: Why do the crazy ones always name themselves?

Quotes of the Week: February 28-March 5

These are my favorite quotes from the past week, not just from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

Supergirl
Siobhan: I’m sorry, I have difficulty making conversation with men under six feet tall.

Kara: I save the world better when I save it *with* people.

The Magicians
Mayakovsky: Why are you both so determined to be so fucking bland?

Lucifer
Linda: God cast you out because He needed you to do the most difficult of jobs. It was a gift.
Lucifer: Gift? He shunned me. He vilified me. He made me a torturer! Can you even begin to fathom what it was like? Eons spent providing a place for dead mortals to punish themselves? I mean, why do they blame me for all their little failings? As if I’d spent my days sitting on their shoulder, forcing them to commit acts they’d otherwise find repulsive. “Oh, the Devil made me do it!” I have never made any one of them do anything. Never.
Linda: What happened to you in unfair.
Lucifer: Unfair? This is unjust! For all eternity, my name will be invoked to represent all their depravity. That is the gift that my Father gave me!

Lost Girl
Aife: Bach sounds delightful…as long as it’s followed by Sir Mix-a-Lot.

Trick: Always remember, you’re my blood too.

Blindspot
Patterson: Yes, you can for sure maintain enough air speed. I did the math.
Fischer: How? Where?
Patterson: In my head, where math is done. Please, don’t interrupt.

New Girl
Schmidt: Don’t tell me what to do! I’m her fiancĂ©, not some schnook off the street eating a peanut butter cookie!

Reagan: I hope that the Chicago Cubs win the World Series while you’re in a coma
Nick: That’s one of the meanest things anybody has ever said to me.

Agent Carter
Howard: Jarvis, you just hit a woman with my car!
Jarvis: I know, sir.
Howard: She’s a 2-time Oscar nominee!
Jarvis: Miss Frost is quite resilient. She’s fine. Trust me.

Howard: If she weren’t a homicidal maniac, I’d be in love.

Howard: What am I doing wrong, Jarvis?
Jarvis: We are standing before an incomprehensible rip in the fabric of our world. Use a 7-iron.

Quotes of the Week: February 7-13

These are my favorite quotes from the past week, not just from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

Supergirl
Cat: If they try to evade you, you remind them that I am still holding on to their Hamilton tickets!

Maxwell: That was one messed up daffodil.

The X-Files
Detective Gross: I don’t want to be confrontational here…
Mulder: It wouldn’t be Philadelphia without a *certain* degree of confrontation.

Mulder: Cutler’s eye-line is trained above the door, about Tim Duncan height. We eliminate any 76ers, ’cause those guy can’t find the rim.

Scully: I don’t care about the big questions right now, Mulder. I just want one more chance to ask my mom a few little ones.

Jane the Virgin
Narrator: This is making me feel a little pervy.

New Girl
Reagan: I think he’s having a seizure.
Cece: No, no. It’s just that when he has to process a lot of emotions, sometimes he likes to do Nick Cannon’s solo from Drumline.

Schmidt: Everybody knows that there is a window of time before any wedding where some amazing person comes out of the woodwork and tries to steal a bride. It’s the plot of every romantic comedy. I’m the Bridgette Wilson-Sampras here!
Cece: Who?
Reagan: I don’t know.
Schmidt: Oh, I suppose you’re both too “cool’ to have seen THE WEDDING PLANNER!

Winston: I’m sorry that I basically let you drown in the shower. And then called you a soggy little bitch.

Quotes of the Week: January 24-30

These are my favorite quotes from the past week, not just from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

Galavant
Wormwood: Oh, Gareth, you’re smiling. Sorry, could you stop it? I just find it deeply unsettling.

Richard: I just can’t believe he’s dead.
Roberta: Does seem awfully early in the season for something like this.
Sid: Could he be mostly dead? But not all dead, ’cause mostly dead is slightly alive?
Neo: Yeah, that’s not a thing.

Downton Abbey
Edith: I suppose Cousin Isabelle is entitled to put up an argument.
Violet: Of course she is! She’s just not entitled to win it!

Violet: I haven’t been in the kitchens in at least twenty years.
Isabelle: Have you got your passport?

Supergirl
Kara: If you hate bigots more than aliens, then, why are you giving Senator Crane so much attention? She’s horrible.
Cat: Because, Kira, while bigots will always take the gold on the medal podium of my contempt, they make excellent click-bait. Also, the more they talk the more they sabotage themselves. It’s a magical implosion happening right before our very eyes.

Alex: There’s no shame in surviving.

Cat: I never got to put a picture that you’d drawn on the fridge. I never got to tell you stories. And I never got to teach you how not to be afraid of the world. And I never got to tell you how amazing I think you are. I never got to be your mom, but I am your biggest fan.

Jane the Virgin
Alba: Poor Manuel, living in the closet for so long. I’m glad he found his authentic life. I have a gay friend at church, and he explained everything to me.

Telenovela
James: I know I come on strong, okay? I’m just an all-in kinda guy. I’m all-in on love. I’m all-in on work. I’m all-in on Law & Order, I’ll tell you that much. Man, I have seen every single episode, including all the spin-offs. That’s like a thousand hours of television! Oh my good God, maybe I do go a little overboard.

Quotes of the Week: January 17-23

These are my favorite quotes from the past week, not just from shows currently on the air, but also other random things I happen to be watching.

Critics Choice Awards
Rami Malek: It’s not just good to be different. It’s better to be different.

Downton Abbey
Robert: You can’t expect me to avoid talking to my own wife.
Violet: Why not? I know several couples who are perfectly happy, haven’t spoken in years.

Supergirl
Cat: A woman with brains who gives up everything for love inevitably finds herself staring into an existential abyss that men, babies and cardio barres simply cannot fill.

Cat: As much as I love watching you millennials deny your feelings, I pay you not to have them.

Smallville
Clark: Weird has become so normal it’s not even weird anymore.

Chloe: You can never be who you wanna be if you’re always looking over your shoulder at what could have been.

Telenovela
Ana: How does a cameraman get a nickname like “Fat Eddie” if he doesn’t have a secret stash of food lying around?!

The Flash
Barry: I didn’t realize roses were so flammable.

Cisco: Do you think it’s a good idea, when you’re fighting crime, to bring a date?

New Girl
Daniel: Trying to get out of jury duty?
Jess: Excuse me?
Daniel: The way you’re dressed, like you’re in a school play about old people. You want the judge to think you’re crazy.

Jess: Did he just kiss you? Why does he act like the Pope when he’s happy?

Schmidt: I bought you this burner phone from an unmarked storefront in Koreatown. I believe it’s small enough to conceal in the waistband of your underpants.

8 Returning Mid-Season Shows

As I do every year, this is my list of returning mid-season shows that I am most excited about. I will get my list of new shows up in the next few days.

1. Galavant premieres January 3rd on ABC, stars Joshua Sasse, Timothy Omundson, Mallory Jansen, Karen David, Luke Youngblood, Darren Evans, and Vinnie Jones. Last season Galavant discovered the dark side of Magdalena, so now he must fight to rekindle the romance with his true love, Isabella. This show is just so much fun. I love that the first episode of the season is called: “A New Season aka Suck It Cancellation Bear.”

2. New Girl premieres January 5th on Fox, stars Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone, and Max Greenfield. After a long hiatus due to Deschanel’s real life pregnancy, the gang is back and they are getting ready for Cece and Schmidt’s wedding. The show waivered a bit in season three, but was funnier than ever in season four, so I cannot wait to see what kind of shenanigans happen next.

3. Shameless premieres January 10th on Showtime, stars Emmy Rossum, Jeremy Allen White, Cameron Monaghan, Emma Kenney, Ethan Cutkosky, Shanola Hampton, Steve Howey, Noel Fisher, and William H. Macy. I am still mad at Fiona for screwing things up with Gus, but am so happy to have the Gallaghers back on my television. They make me feel so much better about my life and they always make me laugh.

4. Younger premieres January 13th on TVLand, stars Sutton Foster, Hilary Duff, Nico Tortorella, Miriam Shor, and Debi Mazar. Josh now knows Liza’s secret, but can he help her keep it? And can she continue to hide the truth from her new best friend and co-workers? I adore this series and the entire fabulous cast. If you are not already watching this show, you should start immediately.
